(That's just evil Derek, absolutely evil.) I think I've only ever had it once and I'm sure I died quickly because I barely remember it.Īpparently there's a small but significant in-game reward if you somehow manage to defy guaranteed death and conquer the Cosmic Ocean using this insanely dangerous item. Personally, I wouldn't last, uh, 22 seconds having this thing attached to my head. There is an upside to this absolutely suicidal feature - every time you teleport, you are given a whopping 22 bombs. This is an absolutely bonkers item that was dreamed up by a madman!Īs if teleporting intentionally weren't already dangerous enough, this item automatically teleports you every 22 seconds! Prioritize getting these items on every run. You always want them, and if you don't have them, you're worse off. Note: I've omitted many items from this list because they're either resources or special quest items, including: (The items are listed within the tiers in no particular order.) (update : 7-99 achieved! boy was that hard)Īnyway after spending way too much time with this game, below are my Spelunky 2 item tiers. My current record is 7-56, which I think is pretty good, although 7-99 still feels far away. I have every achievement but I haven't (yet) beaten the famed Cosmic Ocean. But I love the game, have a deep passion for it, and am a bit obsessive. I won't pretend to be the definitive expert on Spelunky 2 hundreds of speedrunners could run circles around me all day. With Spelunky finally arriving on the Nintendo Switch, hopefully this means that potential sequels will also find their way to the handheld console too. Thanks to my generous friend Joe I've been playing Spelunky will be available on the Nintendo Switch for $10 and Spelunky 2 will be $20. Either way, both games will offer a challenge for newcomers and veterans of the rogue-like genre alike. As Spelunky 2 is notorious for its unforgiving difficulty, it's a good idea to start with the basics and get accustomed to the playstyle of the first game. The deaths will be less frustrating and the learning curve isn't as steep as players are eased into the mechanics a little better. On the other hand, the original Spelunky is far more forgiving for new players despite having fewer features overall. As a result, new players will likely die more frequently and take longer to adjust to the game's systems. However, Spelunky 2 is far more challenging than the first game, as the game is more complex and busier in general. Spelunky 2 does improve on almost every aspect of the original Spelunkyand includes multiplayer as well. For the most part, both are fairly similar in that they share the same rogue-like elements and platforming challenges. With both Spelunky and Spelunky 2 arriving on the Nintendo Switch soon, newcomers might be curious about which game to get. While the PC version of Spelunky has distinct advantages like mods or accessible source code, the Nintendo Switch's portability allows players to progress the game anytime on the go. Spelunky's designer Derek Yu even said the original game was influenced by Super Mario in terms of "physics and feel," which makes the game feel at home on the Nintendo Switch. In particular, Spelunky's combination of both rogue-like and platformer genres means that a lot of the movement and controls are a perfect fit for a handheld system. Enemies, traps, and treasure will always change with the procedurally generated levels in Spelunky, and every run will bring something unique. With the success of games like Hades and The Binding of Isaac on the Nintendo Switch, it's easy to see how the repeating gameplay loop of rogue-likes and rogue-lites are a natural fit on the console. These games rarely require players to sit down for extended periods of time, and are best experienced through small bursts of gameplay. As with other rogue-likes and platformers, the Nintendo Switch often feels like the best console to play on due to its portability.
